How To Create Tags In Discord

Discord users identify themselves not only by their usernames but also with Discord tags. In fact, many consider tags as part of their identity and can grow attached to them over time.

What Are Discord Tags?

A Discord tag is a unique number indicator beside your username. It ranges from #0001 to #9999. You may be wondering how Discord can maintain that uniqueness if it has millions of users but only 10,000 tags. Simple. Well, it considers your username as part of the tag. To put it plainly, Bob#0001 is different from Bobby#0001. They’re treated as separate Discord tags.

Can You Change Your Discord Tags?

Short answer is yes, but you can only get a custom tag if you have Discord Nitro or a Discord Nitro Classic subscription. Note that Discord partners are also given the ability to customize their tags. The platform offers this, among other advantages, as a perk for supporting the developers.

You can still change your Discord tag to some other random number even without Nitro. Doing so, however, involves utilizing a bot. The randomness involved means that getting a cool tag like #0001 or #1337 is a one in 10,000 chance.

What Is Discord Nitro?

Discord Nitro and Discord Nitro Classic are premium subscription services offered by the platform to its users. Casual users can get along fine without ever having to subscribe. Nitro and Nitro Classic are aimed at those who use the platform often. People that consider Discord as an integral part of either work or play can benefit greatly from its added features.

What’s a Discord Partner?

Discord users that have large followings, or members of non-profit organizations, have the chance to become a Discord Partner. The developers of the platform express their support for communities that support them. To qualify as a Discord partner, you should be one of the following:

1. A Reddit community with more than 8,000 subscribers.
2. A social media personality or content creator with more than 10,000 subscribers.
3. A non-profit organization with a valid EIN.
4. A very large guild or gaming community.

Those who meet the requirements should already be using the Discord app. If you qualify, you only need to fill out a form on the Discord Partnership page to formally apply.

So, I Have Nitro Subscription / Am A Discord Partner. How Do I Change Tags?

To change your Discord tag, all you have to do is follow these instructions:

1. Open your User Settings by clicking on the gear icon beside your username.
   
2. On the My Account page, click on your tag and replace it with the number you want. The numbers allowed range from #0001 to #9999.
   
3. Enter your account email and password.
4. Click Save.

I Don’t Have / Want a Nitro Subscription. What Now?

You can still change your Discord tags even without a Nitro Subscription. The change is random though, and you’ll need to use a Discord Bot as a workaround. This works because no two people can have the same username and Discord tag. Discord allows you to change your username, albeit with an hour timer per edit. If you enter a username that already has the same tag as yours, you’ll be assigned a different tag.

What’s a Bot?

A Discord bot is essentially a set of programming commands that are set to run on the Discord app to try and mimic a user’s behavior. They can be modified by users to behave depending on their needs by changing such commands. One of the commands that a Discord bot can utilize is !discrim. Entering this line shows a list of users that have the same tag as your own.

One of the simpler bots to use would be Unbeleivaboat.com. It only requires you to add it to your server to use its commands.

To do so, follow these steps.

1. Open your Discord and create a server.
2. Go to Unbelievaboat.com.
3. Click Invite to Discord.
   
4. Choose your server and click continue.
   
5. Click Authorize and check the captcha.
   
6. On the text input line type !discrim.
7. You’ll then be shown a list of users with the same tag as yours. Note that sometimes you’ll be the only one there. It happens. Wait a while for other users to log in and try again.
8. Once you find another user with the same tag copy their name.
9. Go to User Settings
10. Replace your username with the copied name.
11. Enter your mail and password then click save.
12. You’ll be assigned a random user tag afterwards.

You won’t be able to change your name back immediately as Discord has a cooldown timer for name editing. Wait an hour or so and then you’ll be able to change your name back, with your new user tag.
