Are you looking for a way to check whether someone has read your message on Facebook Messenger? Then you’re not alone as this problem troubles many Messenger users.
Although Facebook has a built-in checkmark system to take the guesswork out of communication, interpreting it isn’t always so straightforward. Many checkmarks look similar, and it’s hard to tell whether someone has seen your message.
This article will discuss Facebooks’s checkmark system to help you better understand what each symbol means. We’ll also cover how to check whether someone has read your message using a mobile device or PC.

Understanding Facebooks’s Checkmark System
The app generates a small symbol beneath your message when you communicate with someone over Messenger. The check-shaped sign indicates the status of your message. These marks are designed to improve user experience and boost the app’s functionality. However, they may be confusing, especially if you’re unfamiliar with their meanings.
Let’s break down their meanings so that you always know the status of your texts. The symbols stand for the five phases each message goes through in Messenger, which are as follows:
An open circle beside the message means the app is still sending your reply. It’s best to remain in the chat box until the app delivers the message to prevent glitches that might lead to data loss. If you’re using the Messenger app on an iPhone or Android device, the edges of the circle will be blue. The web-based version uses grey-colored indicators.
- A checkmark within the open circle
A tick mark appears within the open circle when a message goes through successfully. Although the app updates conversations quickly, the message may take a while to reach the recipient. If the user doesn’t have a stable internet connection, the text will get to them as soon as they’re back online.
- A checkmark within a filled-in circle
When you see a small tick mark inside a filled-in circle, the recipient has a stable internet connection, and the app has delivered your reply without issue. Now you have to wait it out. When will they open the chat and read your response? Although you can’t determine when they’ll join the conversation, you can check whether they’ve read your message.
- The profile picture of the recipient
After the recipient reads your response, a mini version of their display picture replaces the symbols. When it appears, this small image proves they’ve at least opened the chat.
This messaging indicator functions differently in a group chat. Whenever a group member reads a message, their icon will appear beneath it. You won’t see icons of those who haven’t opened the conversation.
If you spot a red triangle with a white exclamation mark, the symbol is notifying you the app has failed to deliver your message. The issue usually occurs due to a network error. Once your connection becomes stable, you should have no difficulty resending the message.
How to Tell if a Message Has Been Read in FB Messenger
Now that you know the meanings behind the different symbols, you can use the Android or iOS app to check whether a recipient has read your message. Here’s what you need to do on the mobile app:
- Launch the Messenger app.
- Click on the “Chats” option in the bottom left corner of the interface.
- Find the chat where you sent the message and tap to open it.
- Look for the recipient’s display picture beneath your reply.
If you can’t spot a small circle with the user’s image, they haven’t opened the conversation yet. You can determine the status of your message by the indicator under it.
Note that the user might have read the message from the notification cloud on their home screen. Short responses usually appear fully, while longer texts are cut off at the halfway mark.
Additionally, if you left the chat for a few moments, the recipient could have unread the message.
You can also determine if your message has been read using the web-based version of Facebook. Follow the steps below to do so:
- Head to the Facebook website and type your sign-in credentials if necessary and press “Log in.”
- Press the “Messenger” icon in the top right of the desktop.
- Navigate to the appropriate conversation and go to the last message. Look for the recipient’s display picture beneath your reply.
If the recipient’s profile picture is under your reply, they’ve opened the chat and likely read the message.
