How to run old programs on Windows 11
Have you ever tried to run an old program on Windows 11 and encountered an error code that you didn't understand? Luckily, Windows has some compatibility settings that can help you fix this problem.
What does Compatibility mode do?
Applications designed for specific versions of Windows often check the version of the operating system installed. On newer versions of Windows, this version mismatch can often prevent older programs from running. This is where Compatibility mode comes in, as not all programs are backward compatible, both in terms of hardware and software.
Essentially, Compatibility mode in Windows tricks a program into thinking it's running on an older version of Windows. This allows older programs to run correctly on modern versions of Windows despite changes to system paths, libraries, file systems, APIs, etc.
There are a few other compatibility features like reduced color modes, disabling fullscreen optimization, and using legacy ICC color management, among others. It also enables some special folder paths that have been discontinued since Windows XP. For example, “Documents and Settings” becomes “Users” in Vista, while “Local Settings” and “Application Data” become “AppData/Local” and “AppData/Roaming”.

Keep in mind that Compatibility Mode won’t fix fundamental incompatibilities. You won’t necessarily be able to run an old game or program from Windows XP on Windows 11 just by changing compatibility settings. There are still a lot of APIs, hardware requirements, drivers, etc. that have changed significantly as Windows has evolved.
Fortunately, using the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter can help identify specific compatibility issues you may be experiencing.
How to use Compatibility mode on Windows 11
To use Compatibility settings on Windows 11, just follow these steps:
Right-click the executable file of the program you want to run in Compatibility mode and click Properties .
Go to the Compatibility tab .
If you're not sure which compatibility settings to use, run the Compatibility troubleshooter, which will automatically detect the best settings.
Or, select the operating system you want to use for the program in the Compatibility mode drop-down list.
Adjust other compatibility options below as needed.

Compatibility mode can help you run some older programs on modern versions of Windows. However, depending on the program you're trying to run, there may still be incompatibilities that require drivers or other third-party programs to fix.
