Back in May 2024, VMware decided to make Workstation Pro and Fusion Pro for Mac free for personal use, requiring only commercial customers (organizations, businesses) to purchase licenses. Now, a few months later, VMware has made another interesting announcement: The company will make its virtual management software free for all customers, including commercial, educational, and personal users.
Effective immediately, this announcement means that VMware Workstation Pro and Fusion Pro will no longer be available for purchase. In other words, Fusion and Workstation packages can now be used at no cost. At the same time, existing customers with commercial licenses will remain on their agreements until the end of their term. Customers can continue to use the products without any disruption.
With VMware Workstation and Fusion moving to a completely free model, VMware is now providing users with the necessary documentation and support through Community Access, Product Documentation, and Knowledge Base articles. Going forward, VMware promises to continue investing in new features, providing timely updates with reliable performance, and optimizing the product to “deliver even greater value.”
This transition opens up exciting possibilities for collaboration and growth within the VMware user community. We want our products to empower new opportunities for both new and existing customers.
Recently, the latest update for VMware Workstation provided important fixes for Windows 11 version 24H2, including proper SKU detection (regular Windows 11 images are no longer marked as Windows Server 2025) and error 0xc0000005.
