How To Mute Yourself In Apex Legends
Apex Legends is a popular multiplayer team game you can play with friends or random people. Since teamwork is an extremely important part of this game, communicating with your teammates is essential. The best way to speak with your teammates is through the in-game voice chat, which allows you to communicate via the microphone. However, using the microphone isn’t always an option. You may play in a noisy environment, or you might lack the privacy to talk to your co-players.
Thanks to the in-game text messages and pinging signals, there are alternatives to using your microphone. So, if you want to mute yourself, you can do it easily. Read this article to find out how.
Switch to ‘Push to Talk’ Mode in Apex Legends
The Push to Talk option requires you to press a key before you activate your in-game microphone. Unlike Open Mic, which activates any time your microphone registers your voice, the Push to Talk option will keep you muted until you press a key.
To enable Push to Talk, follow these instructions:
Press the Settings icon (gear icon) on the bottom-right corner of the in-game menu.
Select the Settings option.
Go to the Audio tab.
Find the Voice Chat Record Mode under the Voice Chat section.
Select ‘Push to Talk.’
You will have to press a certain key before you start talking to other Apex Legends players, and that is the only way to unmute your microphone while playing. This lets you freely speak with people in your room or listen to music.
However, the Push to Talk option is not available on next-gen consoles. Instead, your only option is to completely mute your microphone.
Use ‘Mute’ on Your Headset in Apex Legends
If you’re playing Apex Legends on PS4 or Xbox One, you’ll only be able to use the less convenient Open Mic option. In this case, the best way to mute yourself is to get a headset with a Mute option.
These headsets have a switch or a button that can deactivate your microphone at any moment. Switch it on any time you want to speak with your teammates and the game will recognize your voice.
When you want to go silent, just switch the microphone off, and the game will stop registering any audio input coming from your headset.
How to Set a Low Threshold
If you set your mic threshold to a low enough value, it won’t pick up your voice. This way, you’ll be completely muted and there’s no way for you to speak in-game until you increase the threshold. To set a low threshold, follow these instructions:
Open the Settings menu.
Go to the Audio tab.
Find the ‘Open Mic Record Threshold’ option.
Set the threshold bar to the lowest possible setting (1).
This isn’t the most convenient option to mute yourself, as it’s impossible to quickly increase the threshold in-game. If there’s a sudden need to talk with your teammates, you’ll have to repeat the above steps to increase the threshold. In a fast-paced game such as Apex Legends, you’ll lose too much valuable time.
However, this is still the best way to mute yourself if you’re playing the game on next-gen consoles and you don’t have a mute switch on your headset.
Muting Other Players in Apex Legends
You can easily mute other players from your squad too. This can be convenient if you’re in a random group with users that like to flame. It’s also helpful if the other players aren’t cooperative or speak a foreign language.
There are two ways to mute other users: from the Settings or individually during the game.
Mute Squad Members Individually
Open the inventory while you’re in the game. (Tab key for PC users, or the Inventory button on the PS4/Xbox.)
Click the Squad tab on the top of the screen.
Click the speaker button below the squad member that you wish to mute (speaker icon).
The other two icons refer to the Ping and Chat features, which you can also disable. If you do, you won’t be able to see your squad members pinging you on the map or see their text messages in the chatbox. Since teamwork is extremely important in this game, you should leave at least the Ping option on, so you receive signals about certain areas on the map.
To enable communication with other players, just follow the same steps from above.
Mute Squad Members From the Settings Menu in Apex Legends
To mute all your teammates at once, you just have to turn the incoming microphone volume down. You can do it easily from the Settings menu:
Go to the Audio tab in the Settings Menu.
Find the Incoming Voice Chat Volume bar in the Voice Chat section.
Decrease the volume to 0%.
This will mute all of your teammates at the same time. A little speaker will appear next to the user that’s speaking at the moment, but you won’t hear their voice. On the other hand, you’ll still be able to hear all other in-game audio such as music, character voices, and sound effects.
Make a Perfect Gaming Environment in Apex Legends
Thanks to various microphone options in this game, you can adjust a perfect gaming environment for you. Even if you’re in a noisy and crowded room, your squad members don’t have to hear a thing. On the other hand, you can also silence your teammates, or completely mute the voice chat.
