So, you’re ready to leave the Discord server you own. But before you go, you want to know how to transfer your ownership privileges to someone else.
In this article, you’re going to learn how to transfer Discord server ownership to another server member via various devices.
What Do You Need to Transfer Ownership?
Before showing you the exact steps you need to follow to transfer ownership of a Discord server, you should know what tools you need to accomplish it. Now, this transfer can be done via the Windows/Mac desktop app, via the browser, or using an iOS/Android app.
However, the fact that you are a moderator or have a permission-packed role on a server doesn’t automatically mean that you can transfer ownership onto someone else. Privileges don’t make you the server’s owner.
So, only a Discord server owner can transfer server ownership. Each server is limited to a four-owner maximum.
An “ownerless” server will continue to exist for a while but will get deleted eventually by the service. If you want the server to continue existing, make sure that you transfer your ownership to another member on the server.
As mentioned earlier, you can do this using a Windows, Mac, Chromebook, or an iOS/Android device. The principle is fairly similar across the board.
How to Transfer Ownership of a Discord Server on Windows 10 and macOS
Given the fact that Discord is a gaming-focused VoIP app, it was conceived and primarily developed for Windows platforms (it’s what many of the gamers use). However, the platform has grown past gamer-only use (for instance, many cryptocurrency-oriented startups prefer using Discord for communicating with their communities). As such, the app is available on Apple computers now as well. The ownership transfer method on macOS works the same as on Windows apps.
Here’s how to quickly and easily transfer server ownership to another member of the server via Discord’s Windows or Mac app.
- Open the Discord app and navigate to the server in question using the left-hand server list.
- Right-click the server’s icon.
- Hover over the “Server Settings” entry.
- Click “Members” from the side menu that pops up.
- Find the server member that you want to transfer the ownership to and hover over the entry.
- Click on the three-dot icon.
- Select “Transfer Ownership.”
- Confirm the transfer if prompted.
How to Transfer Ownership of a Discord Server on Chromebook
Unfortunately, a Discord app for Chrome OS devices doesn’t exist. This doesn’t come as a surprise, as Chromebooks are largely browser-based. Don’t worry, though; you can access Discord via your browser, as well. The typical login option on Discord.com allows you to log into your account as you would to any other app/service.
However, if you don’t want to bother using your credentials to log in, Discord’s login screen offers a QR code that you can scan using your mobile app (if you’re logged into it). Here’s how to log in to Discord using the QR code option.
- Go to Discord.com.
- Click “Open Discord” in your browser.
- You’ll see a QR code.
- Take out your smartphone/tablet and open the Discord app.
- Navigate to your profile icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
- Select “Scan QR Code.”
- Use your device’s camera to make sure that the QR code on your computer’s screen is within the white rectangle on your smartphone or tablet.
- Confirm that you trust the computer in question.
Once you’re logged in, follow the steps outlined for the Windows/Mac app above to transfer server ownership.
How to Transfer Ownership of a Discord Server on iOS/Android
In general, there used to be a considerable difference between apps used on iOS and Android devices. But as of recently, there’s a trend of making their Android app resemble its iOS counterpart. The mobile/tablet Discord app is a good example of this trend. So, whether you’re using an iPad, iPhone, or any Android device, the steps for transferring ownership are the same across the board. In fact, the whole thing is very similar to the previously explained process for macOS/Windows devices.
- Open the Discord app on your device and log in to your Discord account.
- Select the server to which you want to transfer the ownership from the left-hand list.
- Swipe left to bring up the channel list.
- At the top of the screen, next to the server’s name, tap the three-dot icon.
- Select “Settings.”
- Scroll down to the “User Management” section and tap “Members.”
- Tap the name of the user to whom you want to transfer the ownership.
- Tap “Transfer Ownership.”
- Confirm if prompted.
What If There Is No Owner?
Every Discord server has an owner at some point – a server can’t be created without one, even if we’re talking about a bot (more on this later). However, if the sole owner of a Discord server chooses to delete their account without transferring the ownership, the server in question will continue existing ownerless, at least for a while.
During this period, the server members will be able to use it, but if measures aren’t taken, the server will be automatically deleted at some point. Thus, a server member, even if they have full privileges that are identical to that of the owner, cannot obtain ownership on their own.
The best way to go here would be to contact Discord Support and asking them to step in. Here’s how to submit an ownership transfer request to Discord Support.
- Go to the Discord Support page.
- Under “What can we help you with?”, select “Help & Support.”
- Enter your email address. Make sure that you enter the email address that you’re using for your Discord account. If you have more than one Discord account, use the address for the account that’s on the server in question.
- Under “Type of question?”, select “Server Ownership Transfer Request.”
- In the “Subject” field, enter something along the lines of “Server owner deleted their account, need assistance regarding server ownership transfer.”
- Under “Description,” clearly and carefully outline the nature of your problem. Make sure that you share all the relevant information here. If you happen to know the previous owner’s username, include this, as well.
- Under “Server Member Count,” select <100 or >100, depending on the server’s current size.
- Add attachments if necessary.
- Finish off by clicking “Submit.”
Although most of these transfer requests are performed without complication and resolved quickly, you should be aware that servers with under 100 members might not be considered a priority. However, we can safely say that Discord Support will do everything they can to help you with your request.
Additional FAQs
How do I kick the owner of a Discord server?
Server owners, particularly when it comes to large servers, are generally trustworthy and reputable. However, no Discord account is completely immune to hacks and other forms of intrusion. Plus, the owner can start behaving in a way that’s bad for the server overall. Unfortunately, there is no way to kick the owner or the creator of a server. Still, this also means that a rogue server member can’t conspire with anyone with the goal of removing a server owner.
How do you transfer bot ownership of a Discord server?
Discord was never conceived with bot ownership in mind. By default, you cannot transfer ownership to a bot. With that said, there are methods that involve using Python and “discord.js” settings that might be able to help a user come up with an owner bot for Discord. Still, this isn’t straightforward and it will involve using third-party and complicated methods. If your server is important to you, it’s not recommended to alter bot ownership unless you have coding experience.
What is a Discord server?
Once you’ve created a Discord account, you can add friends and communicate with various Discord users. However, the primary focus of Discord is using “servers” as chat rooms. Every Discord user can create and moderate a server. Within each server, you can add/change/remove channels and add permissions for different users accessing those channels. In short, a Discord server is a group environment where people can communicate with each other.
Is a Discord server safe?
Discord servers and accounts are absolutely hackable and are often targets of various cybercriminals. If you set the right privacy settings and assign trustworthy people to deal with spam messages, various bots, and hostile users, you can turn it into a safe environment for like-minded people to hang out, have discussions, play video games together, and much more.
Why is Discord 13+?
Users who are below the age of 13 cannot legally create a Discord account. This is due to Discord’s Terms of Service. When it comes to NSFW (Not Safe for Work) content, this is closely monitored by Discord’s support staff. You can post NSFW content on Discord servers that have an 18+ warning (set by server owner).
