How to know when friends are online on PS4
To receive notifications about your friends' online status on PS4, select the Friends menu from the list of icons at the top of the PS4's Home screen. On that page, press Triangle and you will open the Select Friends menu .
Here, scroll through this list and check all the friends you want to receive notifications for. You can use Select All and Deselect All if you want. Be careful when adding too many people because the constant notification will make you uncomfortable.
Select Confirm to save the changes. Now, you'll see a notification in the corner of your screen whenever a selected friend comes online. No notification when they are offline.
To see the friends you've marked to receive notifications about their online status, the only way is to scroll through the list.
You'll also see this menu in Settings > Notifications on PS4. Selecting Notifications When Friends Go Online also takes you to that menu. If you want to turn off notifications completely, select Pop-Up Notifications and turn off When Friends Go Online . This menu also allows you to Disable Pop-Ups While Playing Video if desired.
How to receive notifications when friends are online on PS5
On PS5, go to Settings on the top right of the Home menu. Select Notifications from the list to access the same choices.
Here, scroll down to When Friends Go Online . Then, click Friends That Notify You to choose who you want to receive notifications about.
If you have selected friends on PS4, the list here will be synced. Unfortunately, there is no online filter yet. However, you can find specific friends at the top.
On PS5, you can also adjust when these notifications appear. Select When Friends Go Online and you can turn off Show Pop-Ups to hide them completely. In other words, you can turn off During Games , During Videos and During Broadcasts if you don't want them to show up during specific activities.
Finally, the Display Time option on the list allows you to control how long all notifications stay in the corner of the screen.
How to find PlayStation friends online using the PlayStation app
Sony has updated the push notification feature when friends are online for the PlayStation app for Android & iPhone. It is extremely useful, especially when you are waiting for someone to come online while away from the console.
