- The app will ask you to connect to your bank. Use the search bar to find it.
If your bank or credit union already has implemented Zelle, the app will redirect you to your usual banking app. However, you will be able to sign up even if your bank does not use Zelle. If you can’t find your bank on Zelle, follow the app’s instructions:
- Type in your email address as asked.
- You will receive a verification code. Input it on the next screen.

Once registered, you can start sending money with the Zelle app:
- Tap “Send” on the homepage and then pick a contact.
- Type in the amount of money you want to transfer and press “Review.”
- Check the data once again and add a note for the recipient if you wish.
- The transaction is complete.

How to Send Money to Yourself
If you have accounts at multiple banks, you can send money to yourself from one account to the other through Zelle. Considering that Zelle does not charge extra fees, this can be a smart way to transfer your money to the account you need. You will need to set up Zelle in both of your banking apps to send money to yourself.
Setting up Zelle is as easy as tapping the “Send Money with Zelle®” option in the menu of your banking app and entering your contact details. However, you will find that you cannot set up two different Zelle accounts with the same phone number and email address. If you run into this issue, you will need to add another phone number and email address to your bank account.
Once you set up both accounts, go through the sending process as you would normally do. On the contacts page, add your alternative account as a new contact.
Additional FAQs
What is the cost to send money?
One of the biggest perks of using Zelle is that it usually doesn’t require additional costs. However, you will need to check with your financial institution for potential fees. In addition, in certain situations, Zelle might charge you a fee. For instance, if you don’t have sufficient funds for a transaction, you can expect non-sufficient funds fees.
Can I send money internationally?
Unfortunately, Zelle is currently only available with U.S. banks. Both your bank and the recipient thus need to be U.S.-based.
Can I cancel a Zelle payment?
If both the sender’s and recipient’s banks support Zelle, payments will be completed within minutes. Zelle is a way to send payments to trusted contacts, so there is no way to cancel a payment once you have tapped the send button. If you have scheduled a payment, you can still cancel it from your Activity page.
If the recipient’s bank isn’t registered with Zelle, payments are a little slower. So, you may be able to cancel yours shortly after sending it by tapping the red “Stop Payment” button. Note that this will incur a $25 fee.
Send Money Smarter With Zelle
Forget about long transaction processing times and cross-institution fees. Zelle makes sending money to trusted contacts within the U.S. much more effortless. Don’t hesitate to set up your Zelle account through your banking app or Zelle itself.
