If you have an iPhone, you can use the built-in voicemail feature in the Phone app to set up and record your voicemail. Setting up voicemail on your iPhone can be very useful when you’re too busy to answer a phone call or if you don’t hear your phone ringing. It’s also handy when you get a call from an unknown number.
This article will show you how to set up voicemail on iPhone 6, 7, 8, X, 12, and 13.
How to Set up Voicemail on an iPhone X, 12, 13
Setting up voicemail on your iPhone will only take a minute or two of your time. Once you record your voicemail greeting, you won’t have to worry about missing a call. You can also let the phone call go straight to voicemail when you don’t recognize the incoming number.
If you have an iPhone X, 12, or 13, here’s how you can set up voicemail to answer calls.
- Open the Phone app on your home screen.
- Go to the “Voicemail” tab in the bottom-right corner.
- Choose the “Set up” button.
- Enter a voicemail password, then click “Done” in the upper-right corner.
- Select “Default” or “Custom” for the greeting. If you want to record your own voicemail greeting, choose “Custom.”
- Tap on the “Record” option.
- When you’re done, tap on the “Stop” button.
- Choose “Play” to hear your recording.
- Navigate to the “Save” button in the upper-right corner of the screen.
Every time you miss or decline a call, it will go straight to voicemail, and whoever is calling you will hear your recording. When you want to check if you have any messages, simply tap on the Phone app and go to the “Voicemail” tab. All the voicemails you’ve received will be listed there. You can also use Siri to play a voicemail recording. Just say, “Hey, Siri. Play the voicemail from John.”
In some regions, iPhones give their users the option to display a voicemail transcription, so you will be able to read the voicemail without actually having to listen to the message. However, this is only available for certain carriers and iOS 10 versions or later.
Some iPhone models have the Visual Voicemail feature, which basically shows you a list of all your voicemail messages. You’ll be able to go through them and decide which messages you want to listen to and which you’ll delete right away.
If you want to change your voicemail password, you’ll have to go to your phone’s settings.

- Tap on the “Record” button to start recording.
