Most of us cannot imagine our lives without navigation apps like Apple Maps. To get directions to any location, all we have to do is input the destination, and we’re good to go. However, if you plan on hitting multiple destinations along the way, reprogramming the app every time can be bothersome.
If you use Apple Maps frequently, you may be looking for a way to add multiple destinations at once and save some time on route planning. To help you out, here’s how to achieve this in several ways.
Can I Add Multiple Destinations in Apple Maps?
Yes. this feature has become available in Apple Maps with the release of iOS 16. You can add up to 15 locations on a route. Depending on what you want to achieve, you can add a “Pit Stop” to your route, use Shortcuts, or even create Guides.
How to Add Multiple Destinations in Apple Maps on iPhone
Instead of programming your Apple Maps with multiple destinations, you will leverage the “Pit Stop” option to serve as an additional destination. To add a Pit Stop in the iPhone app, follow these steps:
- Launch Apple Maps and input your destination.
- Tap the blue Directions button, then Go. The app will present your route.
- Swipe up the route card at the bottom of your iPhone screen.
- Tap Add Stop and choose a category (Coffee, Lunch, Gas Station, etc.).
Your iPhone will offer you several stopover options. Unfortunately, you can only pick one from the list. Custom Pit Stops are not available in Apple Maps unless a future update introduces them.
You can also use Siri to add your Pit Stop instead of going through the above steps. Use this method while you’re driving to stay safe:
- Activate Siri by calling “Hey Siri.”
- Call out the category of Pit Stop you want to add, e.g., “Add Coffee.”
- Pick your Pit Stop as Siri reads out the options. Decline an option by answering “No,” and accept it by answering “Yes.”
You can also remove your Pit Stop anytime by pressing the “Resume Route” option at the very top of your screen.
How to Add Multiple Destinations in Apple Maps on an iPad
Adding a Pit Stop to your route on an iPad involves similar steps as on iPhone:
- Open Apple Maps and choose your destination.
- Tap Directions and then Go.
- Call forth the route card by swiping up and selecting Add Stop.
- Pick a category, and Maps will give you numerous options for your stopover.
How to Add Multiple Destinations in Apple Maps on Mac
If you want to plan your route on your Mac, do the following:
- Open the Maps application on your Mac.
- Look for the destination you want to visit and click it to bring forth its place card.
- Find Create Route and edit your starting and endpoints if necessary.
- Click Plan and adjust your travel time if you want.
Unfortunately, you cannot add a Pit Stop to your route on your Mac. However, you can easily send your route plan to your iPhone and add it there. Once you’ve planned your route, just click the share button and send it to your device.
How to Add Multiple Destinations Using Location-Based Reminders
Siri may be able to help you in creating a multi-destination route besides just adding a Pit Stop. You will need to create location-based reminders to use this method. This is an excellent solution if you won’t have time to reprogram your Maps while running your errands. You will use the Shortcuts app for this.
- Open Shortcuts.
- Click Create Personal Automation.
- Choose Arrive and pick the location from where you’ll want the directions to a new destination.
- Tap Next and look for Show Directions.
- Program your destination here, and you’re good to go.
How to Use Guides for Route Planning
Using Guides is another way to gather multiple destinations in one place and make navigation easier in Apple Maps. You can create custom guides with all the locations you want to visit. Here’s how to do it on your iPhone:
- Tap on a place you plan to visit.
- Swipe up the place card and find the Save to… button.
- Add the place to an existing folder or create a new one with the New Guide button.
- Name your Guide, and you’re done.
You can access these folders by opening your Maps app and swiping up the search card. Your Guides are located at the bottom. If you can’t see your new Guide, tap the See All option. Saving these destinations in advance will make it easier to plan routes between them on the go.
Get More Out of Apple Maps
While adding multiple destinations to create your custom itinerary would delight Apple users, this feature is still missing from Apple Maps. Nevertheless, you can use Pit Stops or program your itinerary with the help of location-based reminders to achieve a similar result. The former is an easy way to make a quick stopover, while the latter allows for greater precision.
If neither is suitable for you, you can always download Google Maps for your iPhone or look for a route planner app with more advanced options.
