A Spotify username can be a fun and handy thing. It can be used to find and follow other users’ profiles and to let users follow you and subscribe to your playlists. Each user that creates a Spotify account gets a unique string of numbers and letters that essentially become their Spotify ID. Signing in with Facebook, Apple, or Google will create an account on Spotify with the Facebook/Apple/Google name attached.
But how do you change your Spotify username? Is it at all possible? In this article, you’ll learn if you can change your Spotify username and, if not, what’s the closest you can come to achieving this.
Before We Get Started
As you might have noticed, an app may look different across devices. For instance, the Facebook app on Android devices doesn’t look the same as it does on iOS devices. However, the current trend in the tech world is to make these apps look as similar as possible across various devices.
Spotify is a great example of this. Although the app/web app isn’t identical across the board, things pretty much work the same on all platforms. So, regardless of what device you’re using, the following solutions should work.
Changing Your Display Name
Before we get into how to change your Spotify username, let’s make one thing clear – your username isn’t the same thing as your display name. Your Spotify display name is the name that you’ll see once you access the Spotify desktop, tablet/mobile device, or web app.
Unlike the username, changing your Spotify display name is very straightforward and simple. However, the display name can only be changed via the mobile device/tablet Spotify app. Here’s how to do it.
- Open the Spotify app on your mobile device/tablet.
- Tap “Your Library.”
- Click the gear icon in the upper-right corner of the screen.
- Select your profile (“View Profile”).
- Tap “Edit Profile.”
- Tap your current display name.
- Change it to whatever you want.
- Tap “Save.”
Your display name is how you’ll appear to other people on Spotify. However, changing the Spotify username is a completely different story.
Can You Change Your Spotify Username?
Unfortunately, Spotify doesn’t allow you to change your username. Although every username is unique to each account, you can’t customize it. It is assigned by Spotify, can be comprised of a string of random numbers and letters, and, therefore, it isn’t easily memorable.
So, a username can’t be changed – it’s perpetually attached to that account. However, if you want to have a more coherent and memorable username on Spotify, you can create a new account with a semi-customized username.
Signing In with Your Facebook/Apple/Google Account
Before you begin, let’s make one thing clear – by signing into Spotify with your Facebook/Apple/Google account, you are creating a brand-new account for Spotify. Signing into Spotify through one of these three aforementioned services will still leave your old account active. This is especially important to remember if you have a paid membership on Spotify. You could end up paying for two Spotify accounts.
So, before signing in with one of the aforementioned services, we advise you to cancel your Spotify subscription first or delete your account altogether.
Canceling the Old Subscription
Bear in mind that you cannot cancel your subscription using a Spotify app. This can only be done via the browser. So, whether you’re using a Windows PC, a Mac, a Chromebook, or you’re accessing the desktop browser version of Spotify via your mobile device, here’s how to do it.
- Go to Spotify.com.
- Sign into your current account.
- Click your profile photo in the upper-right corner of the page.
- Scroll down to the “Your Plan” section.
- Click “Change Plan.”
- Scroll all the way down and select “Cancel Premium.”
If you’re paying for your subscription via iTunes, you can cancel the subscription using the iOS app or via a desktop (Mac or Windows) app.
Desktop
- Open the iTunes app.
- Select “Account” in the menu toward the top.
- Click “View My Account.”
- Scroll down to the “Settings” section.
- Select “Manage” next to “Subscriptions.”
- Find your Spotify subscription.
- Click “Edit.”
- Cancel the subscription.
iOS
- Go to “Settings” in the app.
- Select your Apple ID (the first entry in “Settings”).
- Tap “Subscriptions.”
- Select your Spotify subscription.
- Cancel the subscription.
Deleting the Old Spotify Account
Once you’re done canceling your subscription, you can move straight to signing in with your Facebook/Apple/Google account. However, if you don’t want your old account dangling out there on the internet and receiving annoying emails connected to it, you might want to consider deleting it altogether. Deleting the account can only be done via a browser. Here’s how to delete your old Spotify account.
- Go to Spotify’s customer support page.
- Click “Account.”
- Select “I want to close my account.”
- Click “Close account” on the next page. You’ll be prompted to confirm whether the account in question is your account.
- Keep clicking “Continue” to confirm that you understand you’ll be closing your account permanently.
- Go to your email inbox.
- Select the “Close My Account” link in the mail that Spotify sent you.
After you’re done, you’ll have seven days to reactivate your old Spotify account if you desire. After that, the account is permanently deleted.
Signing In with Facebook/Apple/Google
Signing in with Facebook, Apple, or Google is very straightforward. You’ll have to use a desktop browser, though.
- Go to Spotify.com.
- Click “Log in.”
- Select “Continue With Facebook/Apple/Google.”
- Confirm once you’re redirected to your Facebook account.
There you have it. Now, your username is partially custom. It’s the same as the account username you use on Facebook, Apple, or Google, depending on which of these services you’ve used to sign in to Spotify.
Additional FAQs
Will this also change my Spotify name as it appears on Facebook?
If you decide to sign in to Spotify using Facebook, your old Spotify username will be overridden and replaced with your Facebook profile username. However, changing your display name will also change how your Spotify profile appears on Facebook. If you change your Spotify display name (which is very straightforward and simple, as explained earlier), Facebook will use that name whenever you share Spotify content on your Facebook profile.
How often can I change my Spotify username?
As explained, you cannot change your Spotify username. You can sign into Spotify using Facebook, for example, in which case your Facebook username will become your Spotify username. You can do this as long as you have a Facebook account that isn’t linked to Spotify. As is often the case, however, this doesn’t give you too much leeway. In theory, though, you could create a new Facebook account and link any new Spotify accounts to it as many times as you want.
Are there any limitations as to what I can change my Spotify username?
Let’s assume we’re talking about the Spotify display name here. First, the display name can be changed as many times as you want to change it. There are no limits in this regard. Your username is limited to 30 characters, which should be more than enough for most display name needs. When it comes to the content of your display name, it can be pretty much anything. However, we suggest you avoid using profane or hateful words, as Spotify might take your profile down for doing so.
Why is my Spotify username random?
The Spotify username is a string of seemingly random letters and numbers in order to make the overall Spotify experience better and reduce the chances of someone hacking into your account. Avoiding the user-selected usernames speeds things up for Spotify. Of course, you don’t need to remember your Spotify username in order to sign in. In fact, Spotify won’t ask you to enter your username at any point. All you need to remember is your email address and password. Or, just sign in using your Facebook, Apple, or Google account.
How do I link my Spotify account?
As you probably know, Spotify has family plans that allow you to share your account with other users. Provided you have a family plan, go to your Account page on Spotify. Keep in mind that you can’t manage the family members on your Spotify profile via the mobile, tablet, or desktop app. You’re going to have to use the desktop browser. On the Account page, navigate to “Manage your family accounts” and select “Go.” From here, you can add or remove the users from your family account.
Changing Your Username on Spotify
Although the options when it comes to changing your username on Spotify are limited, you can partially customize it by signing up for the service using your Facebook, Apple, or Google account. Alternately, you can change your display name. Keep in mind that it’s your display name that the other users are going to see, not your username. And you can change the display name very quickly and easily.
