How To Create An Invite Link In Discord

In many ways, the whole point of having a Discord server is getting other people to join in and communicate with each other. Sometimes, sending requests can be a little daunting (especially friend requests with specific characters and random 4-digit number attachments).

If you own a server, or you’ve recently joined one that you know someone else will enjoy, you’ll need to invite them. Sharing invite links are the best way to achieve this.

In this article, we’ll teach you how you can create a Discord invite link, and how to edit invite link settings.

Creating an Invite to a Server

It’s relatively easy to create an invite to a Discord server. All you need to do is open the Discord desktop app or Discord on a web browser and follow these steps.

1. Click on the server you’d like to invite people to on the left side of Discord.
   
2. Click on the dropdown arrow next to the Server’s name.
   
3. Click on Invite People.
   
4. Now, you can click Invite to the right of your friend’s name, or click Copy to copy your link and share it externally.
   

Clicking Invite beside a particular name will create a direct invite to that particular person or group.

Whereas copying the invite link that’s automatically generated let’s you invite users from other platforms and share it outside of Discord. By default, the invite link expires in one day. But you can change this setting by clicking on the Edit Invite link text.

Inviting or giving an invite link to a server gives access to any channel within that server. If you want to invite another user to a Discord channel, keep reading.

Creating an Invite to a Channel

If you wish to invite someone to only a particular channel, you can use the channel level invite option.

1. Open Discord on the desktop app or the web browser. Click on the server where the channel’s located on the left side.
   
2. Click on the Create Invite icon to the right of the channel name.
   
3. Click Invite next to your Discord friend’s names to send them a direct link. Or, click Copy to share the link with friends outside of Discord.
   

Similar to the server invite, you can choose a friend, or a DM group and click Invite to send a direct invitation. You can also copy the generated invite link to share with others.

Sharing a channel invite link will direct the person clicking on the link to the specific channel.

Creating an Invite When You Aren’t the Admin

If you aren’t the owner of a Server or even an Admin, you can still send an invite (in most cases). If you’re in a Server and would like to send an invite to someone else, follow the exact same instructions as above.

If you don’t see the option, that means that you don’t have the permissions to do so. You can either request access from an Admin or ask them to send the invite for you.

Discord is so incredibly customizable that some server owners will set up a probation period for you after which you can invite people.

Editing Invite Specifications

Clicking on the Edit Invite link text will open a window that will allow you to specify conditions for the link itself.

You can set an expiration for the link. After the time specified, clicking on the link will return a message that the invite is invalid. A link can be set to expire either for 30 minutes, one hour, six hours, 12 hours, a day, or never.

You can also limit the number of times a link can be used. When this number is reached, an invalid link message will also be displayed. A link can be set to only be used once, five times, 10 times, 25 times, 50 times, or 100 times.

You can also set the link to grant only temporary membership. This means that any member using the link will be kicked out of the channel automatically if they log out. This is useful when you’re inviting strangers into the chat and don’t necessarily want to give them permanent access to the server.

Temporary membership can be overridden if the person invited is granted roles that give them permanent access.

Granting Others Permission to Invite

You can also allow other members of a channel to invite others by creating their own invite link. This is done by granting them permissions, at both the channel or server level.

To allow invite permissions to a channel choose the Edit Channel option on the right side of the channel name.

On the menu shown, choose Permissions. You can now assign permissions for each role in your channel. Click on a role and under the General Permissions menu, click the green checkmark on Create Invite. Once you’re done, click Save Changes on the popup that appears.

If the channel permissions under a category differ from each other, you can choose to sync these by clicking on Sync Now on the popup. Otherwise, you can keep a channel’s permissions unique to itself.

To allow invite permissions at the server level, click the down arrow on the top beside the server name. On the menu that appears, choose Server Settings.

Once the settings are open, select Roles on the menu. Choose a role that you want to grant permissions to. Scroll down until you see the Create Invite option under general Permissions. If the tab is green then it’s enabled.

You can assign Invite Permissions for each role individually, and this will grant it for the entire server.

Keeping Channels Private

Editing channels to remove invite privileges is useful if you want to make a certain channel private. This ensures that people can only be invited by those with administrator roles. Making invite links temporary also controls the number of people that can access a channel. Invite permissions aren’t only for letting people in, they can be used for keeping people out as well.

Do you have to have an invite link to join a server?

No, but some server owners do restrict access to the public. If the server isn’t public, the steps above won’t work for you.

The moderator sets this permission up in the Server Settings, so you may be able to join without an invite.

Use the Explore Public Servers button to access new communities and find like-minded gamers and friends on Discord. There are several communities and selections to help narrow down the right server for you. Once you find one, click on the server, read the notes in the pop-up (seriously, you don’t want to get banned), and you’re all set.

There’s a preview option if you aren’t sure you’d like to join that public server. Simply click the “I’ll just look around for now” option in the pop-up window after clicking on the server to see what it’s all about.

Can I send an invite link on Discord mobile?

Absolutely. Open the Discord app and select the server that interests you. Then, do this:

1. Tap on the three dots in the upper right corner.

2. Tap on the Invite icon.

3. Finally, tap Invite to add other users within Discord. Or, tap Copy to send the server link externally.

Select the member you’d like to invite and proceed. They should receive an alert with the invite link.

Why can’t I accept an invite?

The main reason you can’t accept an invite is that you were banned from that server. Even if you’ve created a new profile and can’t accept an invite, it’s because a server ban is an IP ban. This means that Discord is picking up your device’s IP address and recognizing that you aren’t supposed to be allowed in this server anymore.

Another reason the link won’t work for you is that your Birthday on Discord shows that you’re younger than 18. To protect younger users and adhere to local laws, Discord allows only those over the age of 13 to join Discord and those over 18 to join NSFW (Not Safe for Work – may contain explicit or adult content) channels.
